This month's featured artist is Hena from Belleville, New Jersey. I got a chance to interview her about her collection of photography! Here is what she had to say...

What type of artwork do you do?
I sell mostly architectural and nature photographs taken during my travels to various locations around the world.

How long have you been creating?
A little over 3 years.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
I take photographs whenever I travel. Then the month or so after each travel is spent editing those photograph. The rest of my time usually goes into blogging and other forms or online promotion.

What inspires you to create?
Everything. I am inspired by the way a chair sits there with the sunlight highlighting its shape. I am inspired by architecture both new and old and the details that we overlook.

Where do you do your creating?
Photographs are taken on location and the editing is done at home.

Have you always been artsy?
A bit but not really. I always wanted to be a writer. But when I went to college i was actually headed off to be a lawyer. Photography I picked up as a minor and then dropped law altogether.

Do you have another job?
No. Though I think being a stay at home mom should count as being a job :)

Where do you sell your pieces?
On Etsy, I also have a website and currently also at a gallery.

Do you enjoy what you do?
Yes, I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't.

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
It is so hard to pick one. Each has a story, there are photographs I took in Pakistan the birthplace of my parents and are steeped in culture and things that feel like home. Others where taken with my little boy in tow or when my husband and I traveled through Europe. Picking a favorite would be like picking a favorite child.

This month's featured artist is a mother and daughter duo from Louisville, Kentucky United States. I got a chance to interview them about their collection of fine jewelry! Here is what they had to say...

What type of artwork do you do?
A List Designs offers handcrafted earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings using sterling silver, 14k gold fill, precious/semi-precious gemstones and pearls. Custom made sterling silver metalwork is also available.

How long have you been creating?
We're actually a mother/daughter team. In 2004, I (the daughter) got into beading and started making sterling silver or 14k gold fill earrings and necklaces with semi-precious stones. In 2007, my mother showed an interest in making jewelry, too, so I taught her the basics of beading. She caught on quickly and has even taught me a thing or two since then! In 2009, I enrolled in classes with a professional metal smith and have been learning how to work in silver ever since. Together, my mother and I officially launched A List Designs in 2010.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
We like to spend several hours a day during the week, and sometimes we'll work all day long on Saturdays and Sundays. It's so much fun that we don't really consider it work, though.

What inspires you to create?
Designing jewelry is a wonderful creative outlet and the perfect stress reliever!

Do you have a designing process?
Things like nature and architecture frequently influence my pieces. However, my mother literally dreams up her designs.

Where do you do your creating?
Most of the time we work at my mother's house, but I also have the beginnings of my metalsmithing studio at mine.

Have you always been artsy?
Yes, we both also love drawing and painting. We also love working on various craft projects. My mother enjoys sewing and knitting, as well.

Do you have another job?
Yes, as an independent contractor, I work various promotional events. My mother is a grant writer for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Where do you sell your pieces?
We sell our pieces online on Etsy - AListDesign.Etsy.com We also sell our pieces in a couple of local shops, Edenside Gallery and Les Filles Boutique, in Louisville, KY.

Do you enjoy what you do?
Making jewelry started off as a hobby for both of us, and it's even better that something we really love doing has also become an extra source of income for us.

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
Our Sterling Silver Arrow Necklace with Gemstones is probably my favorite piece that we currently offer. It's part of our celebrity collection because it was inspired by a necklace Dianna Agron wore on the September 2011 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine. Of course, each pendant is fully handmade and unique. Plus, the necklace is customizable with the buyer's choice of gemstones, which I think is really neat. Last but not least, it's been our best seller, so I can't help but love it!

This month's featured artist is Tara of Chicago, Illinois, United States. I got a chance to interview her about her collection of handwoven bracelets! Here is what she had to say...

What type of artwork do you do?
I primarily create handwoven bracelets including modern beaded macrame designs and unique friendship bracelets. I also enjoy making charm necklaces and earrings.

How long have you been creating?
I started making handwoven jewelry when I was a child and even tried to sell my work online when I was 14. Unfortunately, Etsy did not exist back in the 90s, so it was a bit harder to share my creations with the world.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
I currently spend about 15-20 hours a week working on my designs, but would happily work on them all day if I had the time!

What inspires you to create?
I draw inspiration from styles and colors of various cultures from around the world. I am particularly drawn to Native American designs as my great-grandfather was part of the Shawnee nation.

Do you have a designing process?
I don't have a set process. Sometimes I get an idea for a new design and try different techniques until my vision becomes reality. Other times I'll just start working on a new piece with only a color scheme or basic pattern in mind and see what I end up with.

Where do you do your creating?
In Chicago space is not plentiful, but we are lucky enough to have a very small den in which I have a desk to work at. Sometimes I'll also bring my work into the living room so I can sit with my fiance while I work.

Have you always been artsy?
I have definitely enjoyed the artistic process my whole life and was a member of art club during high school, but I have never thought of myself as being artsy. I consider myself more of a craftsman than an artist.

Do you have another job?
Currently I am in a doctoral program for cognitive psychology. I just finished my Masters in December and I also work as a teaching assistant to pay the bills. Yeah, I'm kind of a nerd. :)

Where do you sell your pieces?
Currently I only sell my jewelry on Etsy, but I'm considering working with a local brick and mortar store here in Chicago that specializes in handmade goods.

Do you enjoy what you do?
I absolutely love creating jewelry! I find it both relaxing and gratifying, and I especially love that I can share my designs with people all over the world thanks to Etsy!

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
While I like every piece I put in my shop, I definitely have a few favorites. If I had to pick just one, I would say that my Navajo inspired friendship and chain bracelet is my favorite and it has become my signature design.

This month's featured artist is LeAnn of Mississippi, United States. I got a chance to interview her about her collection of upcycled pieces! Here is what she had to say...

What type of artwork do you do?
My passions are photography and writing, but I enjoy venturing out into new things. I love finding castoff items and turning them into something completely new and different. I use vintage and upcycled elements to create nearly all of my small home décor items.

How long have you been creating?
For as long as I can remember. I wrote my first book in the third grade, and have been crafting since crayons were put within my reach.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
Physically – not nearly as much as I need to. Mentally – constantly. Like most, the daily grind is usually my excuse for putting things off. But, I've made a resolution to invest more time, and stop using excuses.

What inspires you to create?
It can be the tiniest thing. I might see a DIY post online, or see an item in a store that makes me think, "Oh I could do that, but I would change this, or add that here." I also get tremendous inspiration digging through junk shops. You'd be surprised at the things you find.

Do you have a designing process?
I let things tell me what they want to be. I've found that if I try to force it, I don't usually end up pleased with the final product. I once found a 1950's magazine table – the kind with the pockets on the sides – and painted it three times before giving up and sitting in the floor in front of it. After staring at it for quite some time, it began to look like a frog. So, I painted it a fourth time, made wood cutout eyes to hang from the center opening, and it became the cutest little frog table I've ever seen (if I do say so myself).

Where do you do your creating?
Everywhere – and I'm very messy about it. I work on several projects at once, so I end up with little piles scattered here and there. Strangely though, I find that I think better in a non-cluttered environment. When a project isn't going as smoothly as it should, I organize my space, and my focus becomes clearer.

Have you always been artsy?
Yes I have. As a child, nothing made me happier than receiving a craft kit at Christmas. When I was eight, I got into a lot of trouble for ripping up my aunt's favorite shirt to make a purse. It was the mid 1970's, so you can imagine how pretty the purse (and the shirt) was…I loved it!

Do you have another job?
I worked in Marketing and Graphic Design for about 20 years before my husband and I relocated. Rather than go through the tedious process of finding a new job in a new environment, I decided to look into other, more fulfilling, ways to earn a living.

Where do you sell your pieces?
For the past six years, I've operated booth spaces in local antique malls where I sell large scale painted furniture pieces. I just recently opened Lé Maison Belle at Etsy where I'm focusing mainly on small home décor pieces and photography.

Do you enjoy what you do?
I love it! I always knew that I liked writing and photography, but I was a little surprised to find out how much enjoyment I get from making the items like I sell on Etsy. There is something about working with your hands, building something from start to finish, that gives you an unequal sense of peacefulness.

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
Other than the photographs, I'd have to say the Dream Big sign. I sat down on the computer to design a Beach sign because they seemed to be popular, but I just couldn't get into it. I started playing around and came up with the Dream Big sign, which is more my style.

What type of artwork do you do?
Well, here’s the place for my standard introduction! When introducing myself to a group of people one time, I was asked to name my hobbies - tell them what I do. I promptly informed them that it would be quicker to tell them what I DON'T do! I love all things creative, even the ones I can't do - yet!

How long have you been creating?
I have been creating as long as I can remember. Seriously, one of my earliest memories is of my mother teaching me cross stitch on some over-sized pattern cards! I started making simple bracelets when I was about eight, and my grandma taught me to crochet when I was nine, and it’s just progressed from there!

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
When you consider that my crafting includes many more than you will ever see in my Etsy or Artfire shops, I usually spend several hours every day crafting. Well, that depends. Most days I look on cooking as a wonderful craft, but some days it’s just putting food on the table.

What inspires you to create?
Everything inspires me to create! I find a lot of creative thought comes from nature, my family, music, art and the like, but sometimes something as odd as a smell will cause a random thought cascade ending with some wonderful creation! Of course, there’s always the grand mother of invention – necessity! Because my younger son has an inseam of 36” and a waist of 29”, I have become very very good at making pants!

Do you have a designing process?
Hmmm. Not really. I just decide what I want as an end result and figure out how to get there. For my bead crochet, I usually envision a pattern, deconstruct it, write it down, string a test piece, work it up, decide if it looks good, and then make a completed jewelry piece from it. I have skipped all but the first and last steps more than once, though. It’s always a relief when it turns out!

Where do you do your creating?
Literally everywhere except the shower. I am always working on at least three different projects, and I always have at least one going that I can take with me anywhere I go. I am so used to waiting for the boys at karate, saxophone lesson, car pool pickup, soccer games, and on and on, that I began to carry small projects with me wherever I go. Now everyone always expects to see me whip out a ReCycladelic bracelet or bead crochet rope almost every time I sit down. They all know I don’t carry a purse – that’s my work bag!

Have you always been artsy?
I literally do not remember a time where I have not wanted to create. I was a total tomboy growing up, I mean I played tackle football with my brothers and their friends – my brothers are 5 and 8 years older than me! But still, I would come in from that and sit down at the sewing machine or pick up the crochet hooks or head for the kitchen. I have always loved to create and I always will.

Do you have another job?
Unfortunately, no. I have a degree in computer programming, but with my sons in school my husband and I decided it would be better for me to work part time. Unfortunately, I have had two separate jobs outsourced to India and with the economy, no one is hiring part time right now. I would love to go back to it in the near future, but that wouldn’t mean I wouldn’t still do everything else as well! One of the reasons I love programming is that it is actually very creative. A truly good program is as much art as it is science!

Where do you sell your pieces?
I actually sell most of my pieces as direct commission. I also have my etsy shop and my artfire shop, plus I commission in a couple of local stores and participate in some art fairs and farmer’s markets. Each one has its benefits and I enjoy them all.

Do you enjoy what you do?
I love what I do! If I don’t, why bother?

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
I would never put anything in my shop that I wouldn’t be delighted to wear or use myself, but the one that really stands out for me is the Black Diamonds bead crochet necklace. I truly consider it a stunningly beautiful piece of jewelry, and every time I wear mine I have at least one person stopping me to ask me about it.

Do you have a blog or website setup?
I do! I have a blog. It is fairly new and I don’t have a lot of posts yet, but it’s there. It’s not really a business blog, although there will be business stuff on there. So far I have posted about my garden, a short vacation and the U2 concert. I’m having fun with it – I hope my followers are too! This month's featured artist is Jacqueline of Spokane United States. I got a chance to interview her about her collection from lovely jewelry to throw cushions and supplies! Here is what she had to say...

What type of artwork do you do?
NedjmaBazaar makes jewelry and decor inspired by culture and nature, with a heavy African and Arabian influence.

My shop MesEtoiles makes edibles. mostly non perishables like teas and spice blends with a cooking lesson, which I call the MesEtoiles world chef series. This is where I adapt favorite restaurant fare from different cultures to recipes for weeknight meals anyone can make. I find this to be valuable for saving money and being adventurous in your repertoire. I also make spicy chocolate truffles... which are very popular.

How long have you been creating?
How long have I been alive? I have been drawing, painting, cooking, and beading as far back as I can remember. Although I have surely adapted and improved over the years.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
Typically, anywhere for 20-30 hours a week. Then another 20-30 promoting and selling it.

What inspires you to create?
Well, there is a never ending whirlwind of thoughts that race through my head all the time. I think there is a little elf in my head that grabs thoughts as they race by and puts them together and hands them to me - No! Seriously, I am heavily inspired by nature, culture, and color. I love rich and dramatic color combination's.

Do you have a designing process?
Yes, but its more a non-process. its like reading tea leaves. The pieces fall where they fall and I try to make sense of them. Once I organized my bead bucket and subsequently had a creators block until they all fell off a shelf and ended up back in a bucket. I let the beads tell me what to do, rather than the other way around.

Where do you do your creating?
At home. Typically on my couch although I have been beading in the back yard all week while my son plays. I do a lot of creating in my head. I pretty much never stop creating. Oh, and my kitchen of course.

Have you always been artsy?
Since i came out of the womb. My mom is an artist and my dads family are musicians. It is in our blood and we are never happy doing anything else.

Do you have another job?
I did but now I do not. I am doing all I can to make creation my job, on Etsy and otherwise.

Where do you sell your pieces?
Currently I sell on Etsy as well as locally. I am coming up with ideas for other venues as well.

Do you enjoy what you do?
Immensely! I stopped creating when my son was born and became so depressed and lost. I feel like now that I am back to doing what I love, I have woken up from a deep sleep. I am very thrilled about it.

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
I have several. I have one simple pair of earrings that I had to make myself a clone of. I loved them so much: Tribal Earrings and for my more complex work it would have to be my
Earthy Beaded Necklace really though, its hard to choose.

My new favorite toy

Lately I've been diving into scrapbooking, card and tag making and and have fallen in love with various paper packs, embellishments, ink pads, stamps etc... Just found my new favorite scrapbooking toy. Purchased in online a few days ago from Etsy shop www.photomamaregina.etsy.com and just opened it today. I just know we are going to be the best of friends. Look how pretty those flowers are, going to be making hundred upon hundreds. Be still my excited heart =)

What is your favorite scrapbooking tool? I would love to get a cricut, maybe for my Birthday?!

This month's featured artist is Stephanie of Northern California Coast. I got a chance to interview her about her collection of lovely children's apparel and accessories! Here is what she had to say...

What type of artwork do you do?
Create children's clothing and accessories.

How long have you been creating?
Probably 8 years total . . . I was recently given a sewing machine, and decided less than a year ago to take up sewing after a very, very long hiatus!

I used to make most of my clothing as a teenager, because I was mortified whenever a classmate wore the same dress as me. Once my children were born, I found I was always having to work outside the home. Then there were the needles, pins and scissors that couldn't be left out where little toes and fingers could get hurt, so eventually the sewing machine went bye-bye!

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
Varies. Can go one or two weeks without creating, then can spend 20 hours the next two weeks!!! It has to be fun, or I don't do it!

What inspires you to create?
My grandchildren, they are very special little people. Colors and textures that I just want to reach out and touch , nostalgic things . . . like sock monkeys, ruffles, old buttons and bow-ties.

Do you have a designing process?
I love to collect patterns, fabrics, ribbon, and embellishments. In my mind I pull together design elements, but it's really fun when I sit down and arrange pieces to incorporate. Many times I go a different direction and making something else with the fabric or embellish with other pieces I have instead.

Where do you do your creating?
In my head, bouncing ideas back and forth at Starbucks with my BFF, then I get down and dirty cutting out patterns on my kitchen counter, and operating the sewing machine on the kitchen table, haha. My treat at the end is any hand sewing that needs to be done, while in bed watching television.

Have you always been artsy?
Never really thought of myself as "creative" or "artsy" for some reason. I always had a rebellious streak when it came to following sewing pattern suggested fabrics. Always wanting to "prove them wrong" and use something entirely different. That was during the 60s and 70s so experimentation is just what everyone did, just seemed normal, not artsy. My mother opened a bead shop several years ago, and she taught me to make a few pieces of jewelry. I have just begun collecting and moving beads around to see what strikes me, so I can make some beautiful pieces for moms and their little girls.

Do you have another job?
No, we don't have House Husband in our home! He works every day and I stay home, so you could say I'm retired.

Where do you sell your pieces?

Do you enjoy what you do?
I love what I do as long as I am enjoying the process, and not just rushing to a deadline. It is so rewarding when a piece is finished and I imagine a little one wearing it. Working at home on pieces affords me a day off when I want, then the next day, I can get back to it, rolling up my sleeves and gettin 'er done, ignoring the telephone and listening to my favorite old R&B tunes.

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
Probably the bow-ties, they are just so 40s-50s' style, and quite fun to make.

On October 2nd I was lucky enough to participate in the 2010 annual Toronto Art of Fashion show. Art of Fashion is an award-winning not-for-profit that helps Canadian fashion and accessory designers reach consumers and media, and launch their careers. I had so much fun and looking forward for next years show.

A crucial benefit to sales is your item photos. They're the first thing your buyers see, and they represent you as a seller. Quality in your photos is very important and can be the deciding factor in a customer's purchase decision. Here is a list of tips that I would like to offer for anyone struggling with their product photography. I hope it can help fellow Etsians increase views and sales!

• Find your style and stick with a theme. Give your viewers something to identify you with. Try to photo items in a similar manner, as this will also make your shop look well formatted.

• Great ideas for photo backdrops are scrapbook pages, books, maps, wood, ext. However, remember to not let your backgrounds distract from your product. A good idea is to experiment with contrasting colors, and try to find ways to let your product stand out.

• Try using natural sunlight rather than bulbs (especially with jewelry). This helps bring out the accurate colors in your items.

• Use all 5 picture spots for each item you list. Experiments with different angles to show your buyers exactly what they would get from a purchase.

• If you choose to use a model, make sure the product is your focal point of the picture.

What type of artwork do you do?
I am a textile artist. I design and create aprons, dish towels and market totes and plan on adding more in the near future.

How long have you been creating?
I have been creating for as long as I can remember.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
I approach Curry Kay Designs as a full time job. I probably devote a minimum of 50 hours a week to it-- each week varies, but I'll spend 20 - 50 of those hours actually designing, sewing and printing.

What inspires you to create?
I love 40s - 50s vintage style, cookbooks, clothing patterns and movies. I try to combine that aesthetic with contemporary designs.

Do you have a designing process?
Most of my design process happens in my head. I'll see something that inspires me and think over it for a few hours, a few days or a few weeks. When I feel there is something tangible I doodle (I'm not the best sketch artist). From there I can create a pattern or keep working it into a screen print.

Where do you do your creating?
I'm lucky enough to secure an extra bedroom as my studio. I do my designing, sewing and other crafting there. I also took over half of our unfinished attic for my screen printing. Though in spite of all of that I'm currently spread out in my foyer (more room for yards of fabric!)

Have you always been artsy?
When I was little my mom used to let me draw on squares of bleached muslin that she would sew into pillows. That was my first foray into "textile art". I've always had my hand in some other form of sewing, scrapbooking or crafting.

Do you have another job?
I quit my full time job as an event planner to focus full time on my business. I still do event freelance work, but CKD is my primary focus.

Where do you sell your pieces?
Right now I only sell on Etsy, but I hope to secure consignment accounts and show at fairs in the future.

Do you enjoy what you do?
I LOVE what I do. It's always been a life goal of mine to work for myself, sell online and making a living from creating. It can be scary at times, but to be able to create every day is amazing!

This month's featured artist is Josh and Kim from Jersey City. I got a chance to interview them about their collection of modern furniture. Here is what they had to say...

What type of artwork do you do?
We’re furniture designers who love sculpture so we try to make pieces that have a big emphasis on form. The work is modern and bold but also functional.

How long have you been creating?
Josh Urso Design has been around since 2002 but I’ve been interested in art and design since I was a child. Both of my parents studied art in school so they introduced me to it at a young age. Our house was filled with paintings, sculpture, and decorative objects when I was growing up. I actually started college as an engineer, thinking I wanted to get into automotive design but switched to Industrial Design after two years and really got into my furniture classes.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
Craft is one of the hardest things to pin down. It’s just a constant challenge. You can always improve your skills and work to perfect things even if you have some natural talent. Our designs take so long to develop because there is a struggle to invent new forms of craft just to realize what we imagine. I’ve been working with resin for almost 10 years now and it still surprises me sometimes. For me, the overall form comes to me in almost an instant and then there is a year or so of perfecting the design and figuring out how to produce it.

What inspires you to create?
I get excited when I come across new materials and manufacturing processes. (Maybe those two years of studying engineering did have an impact on me.) Finding something new to work with gets me thinking about how I can use it to create something else.

Do you have a designing process?
The process begins when I have that first idea for a new design. From there I generally discuss the idea with my partner Kim who helps to edit it and we begin some preliminary tests of materials and possible ways to make the design. Often a new design will call for a search for just the right material. For example, our rope tables use a specific braid and fiber content that we’ve developed over time. It then takes a year or so to finesse the process. Along the way we may need to change the form to work with our method of creating the piece. Trial and error are some of our best friends.

Where do you do your creating?
We have studio space in a factory building in northern New Jersey . All of our pieces are created there.

Have you always been artsy?
I think based on my parents it was inevitable that I would be a little artsy. They gave me an appreciation for good design, quirky design, and beautifully created objects.

Do you have another job?
I do engineering and CAD work for another company and Kim designs and sells her own jewelry.

Where do you sell your pieces?
We prefer to sell our pieces directly to the public either by buyers contacting us or through sales on Etsy. We also sell through a couple other online retailers including... www.artfulhome.com and www.plushpod.com

Do you enjoy what you do?
Of course! It is both challenging and rewarding to work for oneself.

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
Knoop, the rope table, is definitely my favorite design. It took a lot of time, energy, and creativity to get that piece together and I’m just so pleased with the end result. It’s clean, distinctive, and people can’t seem to figure out how we make it.

My baby Buckets

What type of artwork do you do?

We are illustrators, graphic designers and painters. At Studio Jellyfish we use the beautiful form of a high heel as our canvas and transform it’s lifeless exterior into wearable art. What we intend to do is make it so women are no longer restricted to flat one color shoes. As an alternative, women can now show off their fun, creative and classy side by just changing their shoes.

How long have you been creating?

We have always been artists. We believe that you are born an artist, and that “love for art” is something that you can’t be taught in a school. For several years now we have been illustrating, painting, and working daily on the computer. Much of what we do stays digital or becomes printed material. We wanted to find an outlet for our love of painting and traditional art. It wasn’t until I went shoe shopping one day that I realized women’s high heels are the perfect canvas for our art and design. As a woman, I felt it was important to give women all around the world an alternative to plain high heels. I have always loved fashion, however I found searching for unique heels to be quite a challenge. I began to think “Why not wear something colorful that makes you feel confident and able to stand out in the crowded sea of bland shoes.” Studio Jellyfish has really just been around for about 2 months now. But we are really excited to put all of our heart and souls into all the work and design we do at Studio Jellyfish.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?

We work hard every single day! Draw, paint, sketch.

What inspires you to create?

Overall I think that all the things we see and all that we want to do in our lives inspire us.

Do you have a designing process?

We often use pen and paper or Illustrator and Photoshop while sketching out designs or ideas. Afterward we move to the painting process, This is the really fun part. While we are painting we really get to express ourselves in color choices, line weight and the creation of the whole painting. When painting you are able to go into a different world, if even for just a moment and create something beautiful.

Where do you do your creating?

Mostly out of our studio.

Have you always been artsy?

We have always been artists. We believe that you are born an artist, and that “love for art” is something that you can’t be taught in a school. Even as children we were drawling and painting what we saw around us. Both Philip and I have always been extremely passionate about art and all that you are able to express by it. We honestly feel like two of the luckiest people in the world having found the one thing that we love to do more than anything else.

This is our full time job.

What type of artwork do you do?
I have done every type of artwork. Just to name a few scrapbooking, sewing, collage painting, beading (jewelry), drawing, stamping etc... Right now I am focusing on making children's personalized wooden blocks. I am mainly working with wood, scrapbook paper and mod podge!

How long have you been creating?
I have been creating for a good 5 years.

I spend at least 5+ hours a day working on my crafts. If it's not custom orders I am working on, I am creating gifts for family and friends or making art to decorate my craft studio.

What inspires you to create?
What inspires me most to create in life in general, nature, dreams, and family.

I really don't have a designing process.

I have my own craft studio where I work most of the time, but my living room works great to create!

Yes. Always! I remember when I was young starting with origami. I would make paper boxes for all my friends in my classroom. They were popular!

This month's featured artist is Hallie Borden of Chicago. I got a chance to interview her and ask her about her beautiful collection of hand-knitted accessories for everyone. Here is what she had to say...

What type of artwork do you do?
I knit! Mostly hats, scarflettes and headbands. I am always throwing new things in there everyone now and then.

How long have you been creating?
A few years sporadically and a few months consistently.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
It depends on how much business I am generating. If my shop is busy, I don't stop knitting. If it's slow, sometimes I go days without picking up the needles. (Sad days.)

What inspires you to create?
I love the look of odd colors matched together. Combination's that seem like they would be off, but you can't stop staring. So, I guess just looking at all of the colors of yarn I have and moving them around is inspiring to me.

Do you have a designing process?
If I do, it's haphazard. It mostly involves making a mess of all my supplies.

Where do you do your creating?
In my living room, on the couch!

Have you always been artsy?
I don't know if I've always been artsy, but I've always been crafty. I recently found a stash of about 100 terrifying pipe-cleaner and Styrofoam dolls I made as a youngster.

Do you have another job?
Oh yes, I have a few other jobs. I am a busy bee.

Where do you sell your pieces?
On Etsy and to my friends and family.

Do you enjoy what you do?
I really do. It's both soothing and exhilarating and I just love watching a simple ball of yarn turn into something beautiful.

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
That's a toughy. I think maybe this hat: Click Here To View It turned into something really different than I was expecting, but I still like it. I love that sometimes my own work can surprise me.

Here is my latest project I've been working on. A new digital collage sheet. Don't you just love these little owls, they're so cute? I really loved working with these colors. They just work so well together. Digital collage sheets can be used for many different craft projects, such as scrapbooking, glass and tile jewelry, magnets, cards, tags and so much more. Each image measures 1x1" inches square. They are great for making scrabble tile pendants. Just print the collage and adhere to your scrabble tile pendant and glaze over with diamond glaze. Well lookie here, looks like I was busy again with another Alpha set. I just know I will be making more of these to come. You can check them out by visiting my Etsy shop here. I never thought in a million years that one day I would know photoshop as well as I do nor did I know that one day I would grow to love creating computer graphics. This month's featured artist are fellow Etsians Alyssa Krismer and Joslyn Krismer of Arlington Texas. I got a chance to interview them and ask about there beautiful and unique fabric leaves. Here is what they had to say...

What type of art work do you do?
We make modern alternatives to artificial plants by sewing fabric leaves onto hand-wrapped stems. We call them Sweet Leaves and we currently offer them in Branches (large), Twigs (small), and potted plants. Coming soon, sprigs (mini) and wreaths. We can, however, make almost any size or style. We love doing custom orders!

How long have you been creating?
Although we've always loved creating and decorating, we just started creating our Sweet Leaves this year.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
It really depends on our orders and upcoming shows. It can range from 1-8 hours a day. Luckily we really like to make fabric leaves.

What inspires you to create?
We are definitely inspired by nature, beautiful decorating and design as well as fabric, fabric, fabric.

Do you have a designing process?
Our designing process usually begins with an inspiring fabric print. From there we start our assembly line process of cutting, sewing and wrapping. We love designing custom orders. It is such a challenge and rewarding experience to produce the perfect accent piece for someone's home decor.

Where do you do your creating?
We both work from our kitchen tables "for now"

Have you always been artsy?
Most definitely!

Do you have another job?
I Alyssa stay at home with my two little boys, while Joslyn works at The University of Texas in Arlington.

Where do you sell your pieces?
Currently we sell on Etsy and a funky, adorable gift shop in The Coffee Haus Downtown in Arlington.

Do you enjoy what you do?
We really do LOVE everything about designing, making and selling of our Sweet Leaves. It gives us a creative outlet and a huge sense of pride and accomplishment as well as an ippurtunity to meet some friends along the way.

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
Our favorite piece has to be the Garden Green Branches. Our very first Sweet Leaves were made using this beautiful Braemore decorator fabric. The color and pattern go so well with pratically any decor. Unfortunately, we can't find the fabric anymore. We will be sad when the last of it is gone!

Wow talk about a burst of creativity. I sat down last night to create one or two new banners to my shop. Turns out I made sixteen instead. Not sure where all the extra creativity came from, but it sure can come back anytime it likes. I'm definitely not complaining! I do have a goal to list 1000 banners. Fur Baby Claudius

This month's featured artist is fellow Etsian variation of Bay Area California. I got a chance to interview her and ask her about her beautiful collection of bead dolls. Here is what she had to say...

What type of art work do you do?
For now I'm working with beads, but I also sew, knit, crochet, make collages, some bookbinding and letterpress,
metalsmithing, graphic design and animation. I'm always trying new things. I love to experiment and combine skills.

How long have you been creating?
Since I first begged my mom to teach me to sew clothes for my Cabbage Patch Kid dolls in the 1980s...

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
It fluctuates -- sometimes as little as an hour or two a week, and sometimes as much as 15 hours a week. I have a full-time job to pay the bills, so that, unfortunately, takes priority.

What inspires you to create?
The amazing work I see from other artists and crafters, past and present, across all mediums. Anything that makes me say, "I want to be a part of that!" The community that comes with sharing your work and learning from fellow artists. Nature, culture, science. Travel. Even the seemingly mundane things around me. All of this informs and inspires my work, and drives me to create!

Do you have a designing process?
I totally make it up as I go along! I just start dabbling with materials, become totally absorbed for a few hours, and voila! Not everything I make is successful, and sometimes I have to abandon things and start over. But in the back of my mind, I'm always thinking about my projects, whether consciously or not.

Where do you do your creating?
In the comfort of my home sweet home.

Have you always been artsy?
Yes and no. There have been periods in my life when my "artsy" side remained dormant because of school, work, or other obligations. This is when I'm the least happy.

Do you have another job?
I do. I work in the tech industry.

Where do you sell your pieces?
Just for now I sell my beaded dolls on Etsy.

Do you enjoy what you do?
Absolutely. I love it!

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
Hmmm...the doll in the center of my shop banner. She's like a mascot, in a way. Since my shop is evolving, I will probably have new favorites frequently.

I've had my Simply Banner shop up and running for a while now. I decided to add a new line of labels to my shop. I'm so happy with how they turned out that I decided to post a sample on my blog. I have four different label templates in my shop now, I plan on adding more in the very near future. They feature some lovely backgrounds and oh so sweet graphics which I have purchased from some very talented artists online. Each round label is priced at $3

Argh! You call this glue!

It's been a while since I blogged about anything. I decided to come back and write about a gripe I have. As a jewelry designer and crafter I thought it would be nice to have some earring cards to go with my artisan earrings. I wanted to use some pretty scrapbooking paper as the cover of my cards and realized I needed a gluestick. After a hunt for a really good glue stick at my local craft store. I picked up a Scotch craft glue stick. It was a tad bit on the high price but it said for crafts so it seemed perfect. Boy was I wrong! I got home that night and sat down to make my cards. I glued the pretty paper onto my cards, dazzled them up with some cute embellishments here and there, they were so pretty. A few days later when I went to use one of my earring cards, I noticed the pretty paper was starting to pop right off the card. Ummm isn't glue suppose to help things "stick"?
I will never, ever buy this type of glue again. I desperately would love to finish my cards without having my paper popping off. So if anyone has any good glues they would like to recommend please feel free to comment your favorite type. I've tried using the liquid glue as it seems to stick the best. Unfortunately when I tried that type it made my paper pretty icky looking with the final result!

What type of art work do you do?
One-of-a-kind paper-clay animal art dolls.

How long have you been creating?
Ever since i first got my hands on a pack of crayons. As a child, I was always "making things", entering art contests, and taking classes.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
I spend many, many hours each day crafting.

What inspires you to create?
I feel an innate need to create constantly. It's like eating or sleeping for me...I have to do it. Many things inspire my work....nature, animals, seasons and holidays, vibrant colors, flea market finds, retro toys....

Do you have a designing process?
My process is very organic. I don't do preliminary sketches. My sculptured dolls just sort of evolve as I go.

Where do you do your creating?
I have a bright, sunny room upstairs in my house where I do most of my creating. I also rent a studio room with some other artists here in Lexington.

Have you always been artsy?
ALWAYS!! Growing up, I took lots of classes....pastel, drawing, photography, painting, etc. Then I discovered paper-clay in my 20s and fell in love with it. I have been making my animal art dolls ever since.

Do you have another job?
I quit my job a few months ago when we moved from Atlanta to KY, so now I am trying to make it as an artist full time an exciting and daunting task! I consider my other "job" my cat rescue volunteer work.

Where do you sell your pieces?
Etsy, SpookyTime Jingles, Pfatt Marketplace and at a local KY gallery.

Do you enjoy what you do?
Absolutely! It can be challenging at times, but I am extremely grateful to get to be imaginative and creative every day!

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
I would have to say my favorite piece is this piece... Click Here To View I was really pleased when I finished this piece. I loved incorporating an antique clock frame into my artwork. It looks like a little theater, so it feels very magical and fun.

This month's featured artist is Lori Storrs of McHenry Mississippi. I got a chance to interview her and ask her about her beautiful collection of handmade mosaics. Here is what she had to say...

What type of art work do you do?
Lately I've been focusing on mosaic work, but I'm quite the dabbler. I take mini-vacations from my mosaic work and paint, draw with graphite or pen and ink, collage and occasionally throw in a little mixed media to shake things up a bit. I've recently begun to do a little bead work here and there, and also crocheted scarves chock-full of handmade gifts for Christmas! So far, I haven't met a craft or art form that I haven't loved. Most of the time I'm completely enamored.

How long have you been creating?
For as long as I can remember, and my family tells me I was creating before then. I just got into mosaics a few years ago, and before that it was mostly drawing and painting.

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
Not nearly enough to keep me satisfied! It's hard finding that balance between having a full-time job and a having a full-time passion. When you throw in a family and household obligations, it can be next to impossible to find the time to work on anything that can be seen as less than necessity. When you have a driven need to create, you make time. I would estimate I'm able to make about 20 hours a week of actual studio work time, in addition to countless hours made up of 15 minutes here and 20 minutes there of networking, promoting, researching, designing, daydreaming and planning. When I'm not working on my art, I'm thinking about working on my art.

What inspires you to create?
Everything. Sometimes I'm surprised by it; sometimes I'm completely blindsided. It can be a mood, a song, a smell, an object in the sun and the way the light hits it. It can be a brainstorm or fleeting thought, which is why a small camera and sketchbook go wherever I go. Sometimes inspiration is more elusive, or may even refuse to come at all. Those are the times you've got to dig in your heals, dig out your sketchbook, and dig up your previous ideas. If an artist waited for the inspiration to create, they may just miss out on a whole lot of creating!

Do you have a designing process?
It's hit or miss, depending on how much time I have. I usually sketch out the rough idea and try to get my color scheme and any design issues worked out before I begin. Sometimes I do a little research on my subject matter ahead of time to familiarize myself a bit more, and other times I dive right in and work out any issues as they come along.

Where do you do your creating?
I do most of my work in my studio, which is actually one end of my really long bedroom. I do as much work as I can outside, because I'd rather be out there than inside. When it's cold or rainy, I grout on the kitchen counter because it's across from the sink but also next to the back door where I can empty my water bucket.

Have you always been artsy?
Always. It was a little strange, because I was the only artsy individual in my family, and still am for the most part. I remember being very young when my grandmother would take my crayons away for coloring outside of the lines. I also remember her mother, my nanny, winking at me as she gave them back and saying to her "Now Arlene, that's child's got fire in her, you quit tryin to put it out!"

Do you have another job?
I'm also the office manager at an engineering firm. I'm the token right-brained thinker surrounded by a host of left-brained, statistic speaking, number crunching individuals who regularly greet me with one raised eyebrow and the skeptical look on their face that says "I have no idea what you're going to do next, but I'm willing to bet that I'm not going to understand it at all." I'm okay with that.

Where do you sell your pieces?
I sell them online in my Etsy shop, and will soon be selling them in my ArtFire shop . I also sell my work at a coffee shop and gift gallery in nearby Wiggins, Mississippi, called the Mocha Giraffe, and do a few art festivals and craft shows here and there.

Do you enjoy what you do?
I LOVE what I do, and I hope to be able to do it full-time one day. Creating makes me happy, makes me whole, makes me a better person. What's not to love about that?

Do you have a favorite piece in your shop?
That's a tough call, because I don't sell anything that I don't truly love and would enjoy having in my own home. Since I have to choose one, I'd probably go with this one... Click Here To View because it's different. I hadn't done anything like that one before, and haven't really done anything like that since, now that I think about it.

Do you have a blog set-up?
I do, www.dirtylowdown.com I originally started my blog as a way to promote my artwork and show works in progress, but it quickly evolved into a way for me to showcase other artists and their work, and a way to let them know I appreciate them and why.

This month's featured artist is Jennifer Ladd of Milwaukee Michigan. I got a chance to interview her and ask her about her beautiful collection of handmade handbags and more. Here is what she had to say...

What type of art work do you do?
I make handmade bags, purses, and baby items.

How long have you been creating?
I have been sewing since I was very, very young. I learned by watching my grandma, and I just haven't stopped since. I used to make gifts for family and friends and clothes and purses for myself, but after a while, I sort of ran out of space to store the results of my creative inspiration. I opened my Etsy shop in December 2007 and now I have new reasons to create!

How much time do you spend working on your craft?
I sew everyday. I reserve my days for my daughter - she's 2 years old and I stay home with her full-time. She's such a sweetheart and I love every minute I get to spend with her. I sew in the evenings when my husband gets home from work. He gets to spend some "daddy-daughter" time with her, and I get a bit of a mental break while I relax and sew.

What inspires you to create?
My biggest inspiration is color - I get so happy every time I sew a beautiful color combination. And I love working toward the goal of the finished product and the feeling of pride that comes from making something beautiful through my own creativity.

Do you have a designing process?
I rarely use patterns (and if I do, they tend to be ones I made for myself), so each design I make is slightly different. I tend to decide on a color I want to sew with that day, and then I think about my project throughout the day. By the time evening comes around, I have a fairly good idea of what I want to make.

Where do you do your creating?
When we bought our new house, one of our requirements was for me to have a sewing room all to myself so I can work undisturbed and have a place to store all my supplies. My new room is perfect - it is bright and sunny with great view of our backyard. The walls are a cheerful yellow and I am adding fun and funky accents to make it my own (mainly items I am slowly acquiring through other Etsy sellers!).

Have you always been artsy?
I have always loved all different kinds of art, although not really the traditional ones like drawing and painting. I have worked with pottery, stained glass, glass fusing, glass blowing, metal jewelry, polymer clay, basket weaving, screen printing, mosaics, woodworking, and so many more. I concentrate now on sewing mainly because I don't have room for all these other hobbies in my house!

Do you have another job?
I used to be a French teacher for 6 years. But a few years ago, I quit my job to stay home full-time with my daughter. I guess you could say she's my "full-time job", now, although she's the most fun "job" I've ever had!!

Where do you sell your pieces?
I used to do a fair amount of consignment work, but I have slowly given most of that up and now sell almost exclusively on Etsy. I love it and am so grateful to Etsy for giving me a platform to run my own business easily.

Do you enjoy what you do?
I love to spend the afternoons out with my daughter. Since we are in the middle of (a very cold!) winter, we spend a lot of time shopping or at museums and out of the cold. In the summer, we love to go to parks and take walks and go to the zoo. My husband is a teacher, so he gets to spend all summer with us as well - we love to travel as much as we can, bike along the lakefront, and spend time with our families.

I love its pretty shape and I love the bold Japanese print. It is exactly the style of bag that I like for myself. I will be a little sad when this one sells, because part of me just wants to keep it!

Feels like forever

It feels like it's been forever since I last snagged an Etsy treasury. I have so much fun going through etsy, picking and choosing what to add to my collection. This time I chose to go with a lavender and cream theme. I just love this colour combination, it's one of my many favorites. It's so soft and feminine. It reminds me of visiting my grandmother's house in the spring and seeing her blooming lilac bush. It makes me feel so soothed and comforted.
